WORKSHOP

Modelling for the Environmental Management

13 Aug 2018, 9:00 am – 14 Aug 2018, 4:30 pm
School of Biological Sciences, USM,
11800 Minden, Penang, Malaysia
ABOUT

This two-day workshop will focus on water environment, specifically on surface water quality modelling. An important management decision pertaining to water quality control is to estimate the response of the receiving water due to effluent discharged into it and to assess optimal remediation alternatives. For this purpose, mathematical models based upon mass balance are developed and used. One such model is the Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP) developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).

WASP is freely available on the website of USEPA and is a very popular and well-tested, well-documented software used in the USA and worldwide. The workshop speaker is part of the team that has extensive experience and expertise in using this software for research and consultancy. She was part of the team that developed the training modules on Coastal and Hydraulic Modelling (Level 1) for Environment Institute of Malaysia (EiMAS) of Department of Environment (DOE) in 2006 and conducted training for their officers in 2007.

This workshop prepares participants to quantitatively address the fate and transport of pollutant in water bodies by means of simple mathematical approaches and hands-on experience. We will demonstrate how college calculus can be used to simplify complex models under certain conditions. Based upon these specifications, the workshop will be conducted by means of the software WASP and some in-house models such as E2algae, I1DISP and E1DISP. The application of these models for simulating water quality in rivers and lakes will be covered in the workshop.

This workshop starts with an overview of mass balance and the importance of measurement and unit. This is followed by a discussion of the analytical and numerical model for pollutant transport in river. The final part of the workshop will focus on lake’s water quality with particular reference to Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and dissolved oxygen (DO) as well as eutrophication. This workshop will be of particular interest to students, researchers, engineers, and authorities working in water resources-related topic.

Teh Su Yean
Lecturer at School of Mathematical Sciences,
Universiti Sains Malaysia

Su Yean Teh received her Bachelor of Mathematics, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematical Modelling in 2004, 2005 and 2008 respectively, all from Universiti Sains Malaysia. In 2006, she was awarded the UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowship to undertake research on “Management Modelling of Everglades Wetlands Hydrology and Ecosystems” at University of Miami, Florida, USA. Her research interests revolve around mathematical modelling with particular focus on computational simulation of real-life problems to provide insights and to suggest possible solutions. She works on various topics in ecosystem and environmental modelling, many of which were initiated and driven by the needs of the country or industry. She was invited on various occasions to visit University of Miami and Nanjing Forestry University under USGS grants. She was also sponsored by ICTP to attend four workshops at Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) at Trieste, Italy and by Brown International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI) at Brown University to participate in Climate Change and Its Impacts: Connecting Local Variability and Knowledge in a Global System.

More recently, she was awarded the prestigious L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Malaysia Fellowship 2017 for her research on unifying STEM towards sustainable management of our coastal resources. She has published numerous articles, most notably in Journal of Asian Earth Sciences, Ecosystems, Ecological Modelling, Landscape Ecology, Agricultural and Forest Meteorology, Environmental Science and Pollution Research, Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Letters and Journal of Marine Science and Engineering.
